Constructed at the San Diego plant for Trans Australia
Airlines (TAA). Added in the Australian Aircraft Register as
VH-TAP on March 24, 1948. Registered to Australian National
Airlines Commission. Aircraft construction completed on
September 21, 1948. Aircraft handed over to TAA on October
8, 1948. Originally named 'Matthew Flinders'. Entered
service with TAA on January 26, 1949. Operated its final
revenue flight on May 21, 1956. Withdrawn from service &
stored pending sale. Sold to Pakistan International Airlines
(PIA) on June 19, 1956. Registration VH-TAP cancelled from
the Australian Aircraft Register on June 20, 1956. Departed
Melbourne on delivery flight to Pakistan on June 23, 1956. Registered in Pakistan as AP-AHO
for PIA. On December 25, 1956, AP-AHO as PIA flight from
Karachi
was on approach to Bombay-Santa Cruz Airport (India) Runway
27 when at 1130 hours it collided with a Stinson L-5 Sentinel (registered
in India as VT-CAR) of Father Schemamonk Konstantin Geshtovt. AP-AHO
with damaged rudder under the command of Capt. AN Akhtur
Khan managed to land on one engine at Bombay
airport safely with no harm to its 3 crew members and 37
passengers. VT-CAR crashed in the sea off Juhu beach killing
the owner Father Geshtovt and his passenger. AP-AHO
sold to Fokker Aircraft Company, Netherlands, October 17,
1959. Registration AP-AHO removed from Pakistan Aircraft
Register on October 17, 1959. Aircraft registered in
Netherlands as PH-NHZ. Netherlands registration PH-EUR not
taken-up. Sold to Remmert Warner on June 30, 1960.
Registered in United States of America (USA) as N557R. Sold
to Falstaff Brewing Company in 1964. Reregistered in USA as
N503. Sold to Alaska Coastal Ellis Airlines in 1966.
Aircraft reregistered in USA as N196N. Ownership transferred
to Alaska Airlines on April 1, 1968. Withdrawn from service
and placed in storage in October 1969. Sold to Pacific
Nevada Airlines in January 1973. Repossessed by Alaska
Airlines in May 1973. Returned to Pacific Nevada Airlines in
December 1973. Ownership transferred to Pacific Coastal
Airlines in 1975. Repossessed by Crocker National Bank, San
Francisco in January 1, 1976. Aircraft scrapped at Long
Beach, California in June 1979. |
